2 Powerful Questions To Discern Conformity

There is a common dilemma many of us contemplate - we want to be completely free in Christ, but we struggle with conforming to the world’s demands.

And as professional Christian women and servant leaders, of course, we do not want to conform to the world. We are inspired by the bible verse "and do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God." Romans 12:2 (NKJV)

We want to be our very best and filled with the light of Christ so we can offer others the perspective of the Kingdom - not the world.

The Problem: The pull toward conformity, as a social dynamic, is more powerful than we think or even realize, and many times is subconscious.

How many times do we have that uneasy feeling and accept doing things, because we don’t want to disappoint people? It is only natural that we want to be accepted by others at work, church, or in our neighborhood. And things in groups can spread very quickly, leaving our conformity unnoticed.

Nonetheless, we are not at the mercy of this powerful social dynamic. With awareness we can stay in the gap and decide to choose a different response.

In order to discern the subconscious powerful group dynamic of conformity, we want to prepare ahead of time by examining ourselves so we can start shifting the patterns. Here are 2 questions to ask yourself to see if you are under the pressure of conformity:

1. What do you feel you have to do in group situations? Take notice of any "I must do," "I have to," or "I should's".

2. What might happen if I don't do this (fill in the situation)? What is the fear?

The psychology of conformity has been researched extensively. In today's episode I will highlight a psychological research on conformity, as well as the tips mentioned above so that it might help you find conformity and true freedom in Christ.
